Evaluation Questions

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Personally i think that my magazine looks very simular to a standard typical music magazine which are sold in shops. Looking at other magazines i have notices that the front covers were all simular to each other. They included a main feature artist which is the background of the magazine. I noticed that this image was most commonly cut and cropped so the image would have a plain bakcground, i thought that it was appropriate to do the same with mine. I wanted my front cover to look very much like a standard music magazine. I used my sister as the model pretending to be a famous artist making a comback with an exclusive interview. I found that quite alot of magazines like NME had exclusive interviews, i thought that this would be good to include in my magazine; this would draw the reader in and make them want to read more of my magazine.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The main social groups that i aimed my magazine at were young adults between the ages of 15-25 all interested in music. What i think mostly represents these groups are the fonts and images. I decided to use a young model on the front cover so that the younger audience would relate better to compared to an older generation. I wanted the name of the magazine to be paticulary young looking and bright to highlight the social group. I draw the name up on paper first and then photocopied this to my computer and there i could change what it looked like and alter it alot.
This is an image of my final name all coloured. I decided that i would use the colour red as it went well with the rest of my magazine. My magaziune main colours were, red, yellow, white and black.

3. What kinds of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I thought that many newsagents would sell my magazine as i discovered that newsagents are the best place to go if you want to buy magazines. WHSmith stood out to me the most. WHSmith is a leading shop which sells a variety of magazines including many music magazines. The shop appeals to all ages but mainly the younger generation which is the age group for my magazine. Becuase my magazine features a main artist every week i thought that when this main artists plays at venues then this would be perfect for my magazine to be sold. Because it is featuring the artist that many have payed to see then they would be willing to pay for the magazine too.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

I initially wanted to design my magazine for a wide range of ages but then thought that this would be too difficult to do so instead i decided to aim my magazine at a younger generation. I chose the ages 15-25 year olds.

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

Personally i think that you can tell that it is for this age group by the bright colours i used, by it being bright represents youth and therefore i thought that it would attract a young persons eye. Not only this but for the front cover i used young models. Young models are the same age as my target audience and so i thought this would also encourage people to want to read it.

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

From right at the beginning i found it hard using all these kinds of programmes but now i think that i have come on a long way. Before my hardest thing to do was using photo editing kits. I still find some of the photoshop works hard as it is a very complex bit of kit. Throught he process of making my music magazine i have learnt how to use some of the features. Because most of my class didn't use photoshop i had to learn how to use it by myself.

This is the before and after edited photo i did on photoshop. You can instantly tell a difference from the orginial photo compared to the edited one. The edited photo is alot lighter and clearer. The use of the better looking photo draws the reader in and makes the magazine look better. To make the background white i used the program paint. I found paint a very easy and useful program to use. I had no problem to use it the only problem was, was that it was very time consuming.

I made all of my magazines on microsoft publisher as i found it the easiest one to use. I thought that it would also be better to use rather then micrsoft word as you can't move items around as eaily and publisher is quite often used for that type of thing. Overall i found publisher very useful to use and so it made my magazine easy to make.
7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Looking back at my preliminary task you can see that i definatly have improved. My preliminary task was very basic looking and now my main music magazine looks a bit more professional in my opinion. I used different editing styles to create my music magazine. Even the contents of my preliminary task shows a very plain and boring layout, everything is symetrical, however i wanted to make my real magazine a little more interesting my making the layout look simular to that of a professional music magazine.
